We’re excited that you’re interested in learning more about barbershop singing! The mission of the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS) is to:
“Bring people together in harmony and fellowship to enrich lives through singing”
… and it’s a mission that we happily pursue. Barbershop is not an era, style of music, or genre, but a style of arranging in close, four-part, a cappella harmony. Moreover, it’s a ton of fun!
The Narragansett Bay Chorus is the Providence Chapter of the BHS performing unit since 1949, covering Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts. We represent the Society in both competition and promotional performances and have an impressive list of musical achievements, having won the Society’s Northeastern District Championship on 15 separate occasions. We’ve received standing ovations in performances from Nova Scotia to California, Florida to Montreal, Salt Lake City to London, and dozens of other locations. Over the years, we have helped raise more than a half million dollars for local charities and non-profits.
About the Narragansett Bay Chorus Scholarship
Ours is a new scholarship, first introduced in 2021 as a way to support ongoing music education. This scholarship is awarded to up to two recipients each year, with repeat awards available (even encouraged)!
Winners of the scholarship receive an annual stipend of $1,000 and have their event registration fees and Barbershop Harmony Society dues completely paid for during the academic year of the award.
Requirements
If you are a male-identifying student who is enrolled in any form of higher education that focuses on music - major, minor, trade, etc. - then you are eligible to apply for the Narragansett Bay Chorus scholarship!
To win the scholarship, it is expected that the winner will participate in Narragansett Bay Chorus activities (to the extent that their studies allow, of course). There might even be opportunities to participate in musical leadership and gain valuable experience if the winner is interested in participating to that degree!
